FDA rejects charges against duPont product

Two letters of interest to "fairness in media" advocates have been posted at the following site:

http://www2.dupont.com/PFOA/en_US/pdf/MedAdv_FDADismissesEWGAllegations.pdf.

The first is a Media Advisory issued by duPont to present the fact that over two dozen media outlets had previously reported false allegations made by the Environmental Working Group regarding the safety of grease-resistant paper products made with duPont materials.

The second is the letter from the FDA to EWG that in specific detail rejects the EWG claims against the fluoroadditive resin Zonyl RP.  It was also noted in the Media Advisory that the Consumer Products Safety Commission previously rejected a request by EWG to require a warning label on cookware coated with Teflon(R), stating that EWG had failed to provide any evidence that consumer use would cause human illness or injury.

DuPont also stated that because of the "false accusations made during a news conference" on November 16, 2005, more than 30 million consumers may have been misinformed about the safety of Zonyl.

But EWG's not alone. EPA's Scientific Advisory Board on PFOA has declared the chemical a "likely human carcinogen" and just last week DuPont and 8 other manufacturers of PFOA agreed to phase out its production by 2015. Of no concern indeed.

The 20-26 February issue of the Chemical Market Reporter has also reviewed the PFOA situation and the EPA's formal request to ban. Central to the posted issue is the distinction between PFOA and "Teflon" and its use. The focus of the posting was the EWG-FDA exchange and resulting implications in the way that science is represented in the media.

3/13 update - EPA announced that eight companies worldwide have agreed to reduce and eventually eliminate emissions of PFOA by 2015, as measured against a baseline of emissions detected in 2000 (CMR).

I am beginning to really lose all faith and credibility in the FDA. It seems to me that instead of focusing their efforts on protecting the general public they are in-turn being influenced by corporate agenda and special interest. I take everything they say with a grain of salt.
